she / her / hers
Nermin (ner.meen) Moufti is a designer + freelance art director, maker, traveler and whole-hearted warrior for grace and gratitude. Her creative practice embodies the belief that design can and should catalyze positive change.
Currently a senior design strategist at Firebelly, Nermin has led brand design for Planned Parenthood, Onward and Type Director’s Club, and her work’s been recognized by the STA 100, Typewolf, Brand New, and Communication Arts. She’s developed type systems in Arabic and English, taught 4th graders the basics of branding, and taken the stage at Columbia College, Type Tales Chicago and the First Round Conference. As of 2020, she co-chairs Typeforce, an annual initiative to celebrate and sustain Chicago’s type + design community.
She made her way from Syria to Chicago by way of Dubai and Toronto, with pit-stops in NYC, Phoenix and Granada, where she spent a summer studying De-Colonial Struggles, Liberation Theologies and Feminism in Islam. Her graduate thesis examined media control and the role of design in the Syrian Revolution. It was exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum, as well as Typeforce 8.
Nermin holds a BSc in Visual Communications from the American University of Sharjah (UAE), and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts, Media and Design from OCAD University. She has served as a member of AIGA Chicago’s Diversity + Inclusion Committee in 2017—2018, and is the chairperson on the board of Prairie Academy, an internationally accredited independent school in Chicago.
