GRAND RAPIDS, MI – One of West Michigan’s strongest economic assets is about to get an event of its own. From May 5 – 10, 2014, the region will celebrate its first annual Design Week, featuring an exciting schedule of studio tours, workshops, educational events, films, and guest speakers to inform and inspire the community.
Design Week has been celebrated in other major cities around the country for several years, and given the strong design legacy in West Michigan, representatives from the area’s professional groups thought the time was right to make the event a reality here.
“Our hope is that this event puts the spotlight on West Michigan design, increasing opportunities for our own designers, attracting new ones, and building connections between designers and our cultural, educational, and business communities,” said Sara Klele, Design Week Chair for AIGA West Michigan, the professional association for design. “This week is an ideal time to host the event, since it coincides with TEDx Grand Rapids, graduation and student exhibitions at Kendall College of Art and Design, and the best weather of the year.”
Designers, businesses, professional organizations, and educational institutions are invited to take part in the event as hosts, workshop leaders, speakers, or attendees. The community is encouraged to attend an organizational meeting and Q&A session beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5th at the Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc. office, 29 Pearl NW Suite 1.
